DETROIT (WWJ) - Buckle up drivers, road and bridge work requires closing a stretch of eastbound I-94 this weekend in Detroit.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says all of the eastbound lanes of I-94 from US-12 (Michigan Avenue) to I-75 will shut down from 9 a.m. Friday though 5 a.m. Monday.

During the closure, eastbound traffic will use eastbound US-12 to northbound Rosa Parks Boulevard, then northbound I-75 back to eastbound I-94.

Why so much roadwork at once? The closure is needed to safely allow crews to resurface eastbound I-94 from US-12 to I-96 and to set bridge beams at the Brush Street overpass.

The bridge beam setting is expected to wrap up by 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3. This will allow crews to open the section of eastbound I-94 from I-96 to I-75.

The resurfacing will require eastbound I-94 to remain closed from US-12 to I-96 until 5 a.m. Monday. It will open just in time for Monday morning commuters.

Westbound I-94 traffic will not be detoured; however, only one lane will be open from M-1 (Woodward Avenue) to US-12 (Michigan Avenue) during the same time frame. The westbound lane restrictions are needed to prep pavement for future resurfacing.

Another big one: Eastbound I-696 from I-75 to I-94 will be completely shut down from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. All ramps will be closed, except local access to Mound Rd. The suggested detour is M-102 (8 Mile Rd).

Officials say this is for sewer work to ensure proper drainage during heavy storms.

A couple more closures to look out for this weekend:

  • Novi Road will be shut down at 12 Mile Rd. for phase two of a reconstruction project, with one lane remaining open each way on 12 Mile during the work. The recommended detour is Grand River Ave.
  • One lane of M-5 in Oakland County each way between 8 Mile and 13 Mile Rd. will be closed nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 p.m. through late September

All of this work is weather permitting.
