Emergency Crews On Scene Of Gas Leak In Southfield

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Police are asking drivers to avoid the area where gas leak that has led to some road closures in Southfield. 

Several fire engines are on the scene, Monday afternoon -- in the area of Civic Center and the Northwestern Highway Service Drive -- where a spokesperson for Consumers Energy said a worker for a cement contractor hit a gas main.

Once crews determine the size of the main, they can begin repairs, the spokesperson said. There is no word on how long that might take. 

In the meantime, Civic Center Drive is closed in both directions of between Central Park and M-10 The Lodge. The service drive is also shut down. Police are directing traffic away from the area. 

So far, no illnesses, injuries or evacuations have been reported.
