Emergency Repairs Needed On Historic Grosse Ile Lighthouse Damaged By Ice

February 11, 2019 - 11:25 am

(WWJ) Help is wanted to save a historic structure damaged by ice in the Detroit River.

According to the Grosse Ile Historical Society, an east wind pushed ice from the river into the 113-year-old Grosse Ile Lighthouse last Thursday, doing damage to railings and parts of the foundation.

The society says crews were able to break away some of the ice and pull chunks of ice from around the base of the lighthouse over the weekend. With a lot more to do, a GoFundMe account has been set up to help pay for some of the work, which could include the following:

  • Emergency repairs for current ice damage
  • Proactive measures to prevent future ice damage (example: Ice shields)
  • The Lighthouse desperately needs to be painted in 2019
  • New railing
  • Repair existing water damage inside and out
  • Repair windows and doors to prevent future water damage
  • Restore the integrity of the seawall

The use of any funds raised will be overseen by the Lighthouse Endowment Committee. Learn more or make a donation at this link
