WWJ -- An investigation is ongoing after a man was killed in a crash along westbound I-96 near Telegraph Road Tuesday afternoon.

Michigan State Police troopers were dispatched to the scene in Redford Township, just west of Detroit around 4 p.m. Authorities say a preliminary investigation revealed that a man driving a Chevy Malibu rear-ended a female driver in a Ford Focus at excessive speeds.

State Police said there was very little damage to either car involved in the crash, but the Chevy continued off the road and struck the wall on the right after hitting the Ford. Responding troopers noticed the man was not breathing and did not have a pulse.

Troopers broke a window and were able to get the man out of the car and performed CPR, but it was unsuccessful. He was transported to Botsford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities have identified the victim as a 30-year-old from Farmington, but have not released his name, as they have not notified the family.

The westbound lanes were closed from Telegraph to Beech Daly for around an hour, but the interstate opened just before 5 p.m. in time for rush hour.

The investigation is ongoing.
