Ferndale Cop Under Investigation For Use Of Force Against Fleeing Suspect

July 10, 2018 - 4:19 pm

FERNDALE (WWJ) - A Ferndale police officer is under investigation for the use of force against a suspect as he tried to get away.

According to Ferndale police, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the investigation of the incident, in which a 44-year-old male Sterling Heights man was shot by a Taser and seriously injured.

Police said Tuesday morning, that man had entered the home of a Ferndale woman, in the 100 block of Spencer, who had a personal protection order out against him "due to prior domestic violence incidents."

The woman fled to a nearby business and called police, who arrived to find the man running westbound across Woodward, and then southbound toward 8 Mile. Following a brief foot chase, police said officers reached the man, who had climbed over the guardrail along the 8 Mile Service Drive, just west of Woodward.

After a brief struggle — during which an officer’s department-issued Taser was deployed — the suspect fell approximately 15 feet to the concrete below, police said.

He sustained "serious but non-life-threatening injuries" in the fall and was transported to a local hospital.

The Ferndale Police Department has since turned over the investigation into the officer’s use of force to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, police said; and all evidence, including witness statements and body camera footage, has been released to the sheriff’s office.

No further details, including the name of the hospitalized suspect or the officer involved, were immediately released.

With an activie investigation blocking lanes of westbound 8 Mile at Woordward into the afternoon, drivers were urged to avoid the area.
