DETROIT (WWJ) - A major project to bring thousands of jobs to Detroit could mean temporary layoffs for about 700 autoworkers.

Fiat Chrysler has filed a letter with the state that says effective May 30, the automaker will begin implementing temporary layoffs as part of a temporary closing of its Mack Engine Plant on Detroit's eastside in order to retool the location for possible future production.

More than 400 workers would be laid off around May 30. Others would be out of work in June, July and August.

In February, Fiat Chrysler announced it would spend $1.6 billion to convert Mack Engine into an assembly plant and create 3,800 jobs.

The plant is expected to be closed for more than six months during the transition. The automaker said most employees will have the opportunity to work at another location during the temporary plant closure.
