Fire Destroys Apartments With 'Hoarding' Conditions

July 06, 2018 - 8:18 am

WYANDOTTE (WWJ) - Authorities say hoarding conditions were found at an apartment building in Wyandotte that was destroyed by fire.

The fire started about 8 p.m. Thursday in what used to be a photography studio along Fort Street near Goddard. Firefighters were called back to the scene Friday morning after hotspots reignited.

Wyandotte Fire Chief Jeff Carley said the blaze may have started on the first floor, where a hoarder kept various items.

"It did burn a long time. There was quite a fire load on the first floor. It was a commercial with residential. The commercial side of the property was much more storage, more of a hoarder, so once the fire started going it was very difficult to put out," Carley told WWJ's Mike Campbell.

Apartments on the second floor have been completely destroyed and some apartments on the upper floors are a loss as well.

A cause of the fire remains under investigation.
