Fire Spreads Through Marijuana Dispensary On Detroit's West Side

DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities are investigating a fire at an apparent marijuana dispensary on Detroit's west side.

The fire broke out around 4 a.m. Tuesday at a brick building along West Warren Avenue at Piedmont, just west of the Southfield Freeway.

Firefighters arrived on the scene rather quickly and extinguished the flames. One person in an apartment above the business had to jump from the building to escape the fire; he was not injured.

"When we pulled up, the window was open and the occupant jumped out the window and then we just put it out," said Fire Captain Bob Grysko.

Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Charlie Langton said the smell of marijuana was stronger than the smell of the burning building.

A cause of the fire remains under investigation.

"I don't think there's much to salvage in there," said Grysko. "I'm sure arson will be out here to investigate it."

Westbound Warren Avenue was closed as fire crews cleared the scene, but has since reopened to traffic.
