(WWJ) -- If you're looking for a quieter Fourth of July camping experience this holiday, the DNR and the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency are offering Fireworks-Free Fourth of July camping at several Michigan state parks.

The firework-free camping offers veterans, pet owners and other visitors the chance to camp further away from traditional community firework displays now through July 6.

Stephanie Yancer, social media cordinator for the Parks and Recreation Division for the DNR, Yancer says while the firework-free camping has been promoted as a way to help veterans who may be dealing with PTSD, it has also appealed to a much broader audience,

“After our first year, we discovered that it’s not just veterans that are interested in these fireworks-free parks, but it’s also people with pets, people who have family members with autism, people who just want to be away from all the fireworks and be in a quieter environment,” Yancer said.

This gives an opportunity to get away from fireworks and big crowds, Yancer says.

“You’re not going to be going in and going to this park and camping and hearing a lot of things because the community fireworks are right next door," Yancer said. "All of these parks are going to be a lot further away from that kind of stuff.”

Fireworks-free camp sites can be booked on the DNR's website or by phone at 1-800-44PARKS (1-800-447-2757). The following sites offer quieter getaways:

  • Bewabic State Park (Iron County)
