Retired Sterling Heights Police Officer Killed By Drunk Driver Near Renaissance Center

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A retired Sterling Heights police officer was hit and killed by a drunk driver near the Renaissance Center in Downtown Detroit early Friday morning.

Police say the former officer, 50-year-old Daryl Brown was hit while trying to cross Jefferson Avenue near Brush Street around 2:30 a.m.

Brown, the husband of Macomb County Judge Jennifer Fraunce, was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

The 30-year-old driver fled the scene but was arrested a short time later.

Authorities say the man was driving drunk.

Sterling Heights Police Chief Dale Dwojakowski says Brown will be remembered for his big smile and caring spirit, according to a report from The Detroit News.

Charges for the suspect are still pending.
