August 08, 2019 - 8:09 am

MACOMB COUNTY (WWJ) - A major mock disaster drill is taking place in Macomb County on Thursday.

More than 100 police, fire, EMS and hospital personnel are participating in the full-scale active assailant training exercise alongside 250 school staff and students. All activities begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude by noon.

Officials say the purpose of the drill is to comprehensively test and evaluate Macomb County’s response plans and capabilities as it pertains to an active assailant incident within a local school.

Schools taking part include L'Anse Creuse High School in Harrison Township, Clintondale High School in Clinton Township and Fitzgerald High School in Warren.

The exercise is the culmination of almost two years-worth of work with every fire, EMS and law enforcement agency in the county participating as well as local school districts with the support of the Macomb County Superintendent’s Association.

In addition to the first responders and school staff, another 200 bus drivers from around the county are participating in a series of trainings geared towards their preparedness.
