Giant Hole Opens Up On Southfield Freeway Ramp To I-96

DETROIT (WWJ) - A ramp connecting two major freeways in Detroit has reopened following a 15 hour closure to fix a gigantic hole that opened up overnight.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says this is way more than a pothole -- it's a 5 x 6 foot hole on the southbound Southfield Freeway ramp to eastbound I-96. The hole is so massive, the metal support system for the concrete was actually visible.

The ramp closed just after 7 p.m. Monday and finally reopen to traffic around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday.

The closure lasted so long because concrete used to fill the hole took longer than expected to cure, with the low temperatures slowing the process.

The patch is only a temporary fix. MDOT says the ramp needs to be completely reconstructed, but lack of funding is holding up the process.
