DETROIT (WWJ) - Google's self driving car arm, Waymo, is going to open a new operation in Michigan.

The company plans to locate into a ready-to-go, light manufacturing facility space at a yet-to-be-determined location in Southeast Michigan that will support its expansion plans. Waymo says it will be the world’s first factory 100 percent dedicated to the mass production of L4 autonomous vehicles.

A Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant of up to $8 million was approved to support the project, which is expected to generate total private investment of $13.6 million and create 100 jobs, with the potential for up to 400 jobs.

The company will be looking to hire engineers, operations experts, and fleet coordinators to help assemble and deploy self-driving cars.
