DETROIT (WWJ) - Bankruptcy filing Thursday for a group that represents hundreds of doctors at the Detroit Medical Center, Karmanos Cancer Center and other Metro Detroit healthcare institutions

Charles Shanley, president and CEO of the University Physicians Group, says the court filing will not affect patient care.

"We are filing under petition of Chapter 11 to reorganize; it's not a liquidation, it's not a closure, the patients will be able to see their doctors. The doctors will be able to take care of their patients and continue to support the academic mission of the school of medicine.

Shanley says the group got stuck with hundreds of leases after the number of doctors dropped from 700 to 300 over the past decade.

The filing will allow the group to get out of debt. Chapter 11 is often referred to as 'reorganization' bankruptcy - usually involving a corporation or partnership.
