Gubernatorial Candidate Thanedar Calls For MSU's Engler To Resign

June 16, 2018 - 7:19 pm

(WWJ) -- Democratic gubernatorial candidate Shri Thanedar is calling for the removal of Michigan State University Interim President John Engler amid controversy surrounding the Larry Nassar case.

In response to the recent news that Engler suggested in an email that a victim of Nassar was likely getting kickbacks from trial attorneys involved in lawsuits against the university,  Thanedar said in a statement that Engler's scandal is keeping the university from moving forward.

“What MSU needs is someone with compassion and care," Thanedar's statement read. "I support wholeheartedly Trustees Mosallam and Byrum’s call for his resignation. We need MSU to heal from the Nassar debacle and Engler’s email scandal is prohibitive of that.”

His call for Engler's resignation comes just a day after two MSU Board of Trustees members called for the same.

Board trustee Brian Mosallam is asking Engler to resign immediately, saying in a statement Friday morning that the crisis on campus related to Larry Nassar will not settle until Engler steps down.

"John Engler’s tenure as interim president has continued the bleeding rather than stem it. His misguided actions and comments have failed to reestablish trust and confidence in Michigan State University," Mosallam said.

According to emails, Engler has criticized lawyers who represent Nassar's assault victims and suggested the first woman to go public with her accusations was probably getting a "kickback" from her attorney. His remarks were made to another university official in April, a month before Michigan State agreed to a $500 million settlement with hundreds of women and girls who said they were sexually assaulted by Nassar, a former campus sports doctor now serving decades in prison.
