Harper Woods Teacher Guilty Of Offering Better Grades For Sex Sentenced To Probation

Charles Penn will spend five years on probation and then three months in prison.

HARPER WOODS, Mich. (WWJ) -- A Harper Woods High School teacher who was convicted in May of accosting a child for immoral purposes has been sentenced to five years of probation and three months in jail.

Charles Penn was found guilty on accusations by a former student that say he offered to raise her grade if she performed a sex act on him. He will spend three months in jail following a five-year probation period. He reportedly told the student she would receive a "B' if she performed the sex act and would get an 'A' if she did it twice.

The 15-year-old student had reportedly asked Penn, 41, what extra work she could do to improve her grade. Another student testified during the trial that she overheard the comments made by Penn, who no fired when the student made the accusations. The two girls reportedly left the classroom and told another teacher.

Penn, who taught an economics course at the school, will also have to serve 100 hours of community service. The maximum sentence for the charges Penn was facing was four years in prison.
