Homeless Man In Wheelchair Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver

December 20, 2018 - 8:03 am

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police in Detroit are searching for a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a homeless man in a wheelchair.

The accident happened early Thursday morning along Conner Street at Mack Avenue, near the Chrysler Jefferson North assembly plant.

The victim was declared dead at the scene. Those who knew the man said he was likely headed to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen for breakfast.

"He was friends of ours from the soup kitchen. He comes up there every morning and he doesn't bother nobody. He's quiet, he minds his own business and everybody around the neighborhood knows him," said Katherine Sammons. "This is a tragic accident. Why would somebody do that to him? A helpless guy. Why?"

Witnesses tell police a white GMS conversion van sped away from the area after the crash. Investigators are now looking at video from a nearby Green Light gas station to track the suspect, who remains at large.

Conner was closed in both directions at Mack for several hours while police were investigating the scene, but has since reopened to traffic.
