DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit man has been killed during a home invasion on the city's west side early Monday morning, according to police.

The incident happened around 3:30 a.m. when, according to family, 40-year-old Douglas Thorton, heard a noise downstairs and saw the suspect. The intruder broke into the home on Prevost near Greenfield and Grand River through a window, shooting and killing Thorton when they encountered each another.

Police say Thorton's girlfriend and two children were in the home at the time - they were not injured.

Family members tell WWJ's Charlie Langton the suspect used a cooler and chair to break in through a back window.  He allegedly was trying to steal a television.

No arrests have been made.
