LIVONIA (WWJ) - HAZMAT crews were continuing to clean up the remains of a truck fire on I-275 nearly a full day after the incident.

"The semi was carrying batteries and those batteries are hazardous material when they catch fire," said Diane Cross, Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson. "Each one -- and it's a semi carrying them, I can only imagine how many it might have contained -- but each one of those batteries has to individually be, I'm going to use the term 'neutralized' to make it safe before they can move that out of there."

As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, Southbound I-275 from 8 Mile to 7 Mile had only the left two lanes open; the right two lanes are closed. The 7 Mile ramp to southbound I-275 was also closed. The freeway reopended completely around 8 p.m.
