I-696 Construction Resumes For Season On Monday

April 13, 2019 - 3:30 pm

MACOMB (WWJ) - Ready or not -- construction on I-696 is resuming in Macomb County.

On Monday, April 15, the right two lanes on eastbound I-696 from Mound Road to Gratiot Avenue (M-3) will be closed continuously for Michigan Department of Transportation crews to begin diamond grinding the pavement surface. By the weekend, the lane closures on eastbound I-696 will switch to the left two lanes to continue diamond grinding, and a single left lane closure will be in place on westbound I-696.

Intermittent single lane closures on the westbound service drive from I-94 to Dequindre will also begin on Monday and continue through the summer. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained at all times. Work on the eastbound service drive will begin at a later date.

The long-term repair project on I-696 between Dequindre Road and I-94 in Macomb County includes restoring the crossover locations, repairing barrier walls, freeway lighting, sewer work, joint sealing, installing asphalt shoulders, and finishing diamond grinding. Work also will be performed on the I-696 service drives to repair the concrete surface and replace curbs, sidewalks and fencing.
