Investigators Uncover Violations Connected To Fetal Remains At 2 Cemeteries

December 06, 2018 - 7:30 pm

DETROIT (WWJ)  - A tip leads investigators to uncover more violations surrounding the remains of dozens of fetuses and an adult body related to the ongoing investigation into Perry Funeral Home in Detroit.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig telling WWJ that a total of 44 fetal remains have been found to have improper paperwork at cemeteries in Detroit and Canton Township.

The discovery Wednesday by a special task force found 17 remains or cremains at Gethsemane Cemetery in Detroit and 27 more at the Canton location.

"At the Canton location, which was Knollwood, which was not in a search warrant, but more of an inspection, the inspectors found 345 fetuses and one adult, and of that number 27-like violations," said Craig.

"So you can imagine going through each of those fetuses and trying to associate documentation it's a daunting task (for investigators)," said Craig. "But they were able to do that."

In total, 44 fetuses with improper documentation were discovered. They're all connected to Perry Funeral Home in Detroit, which is currently under criminal investigation.

The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) has issued a cease and desist order against Knollwood Cemetery in Canton Township.
