DETROIT (WWJ) - Star power being added to the fight to raise Michigan's minimum wage.

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin attending One Fair Wage receptions in Michigan Sunday all in support of an increase of the minimum wage to $12 an hour.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor in Michigan -- the state requires employers to pay tipped employees a minimum cash wage above the minimum cash wage ($2.13) required under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act.

One of the organizers is activist Saru Jayaraman  who appeared with Amy Poehler at the Golden Globes:

"This initiative would allow Michigan to join many other states that have already required the restaurant industry to pay the full minimum wage plus tips, and also raise the minimum wage for all workers to $12 an hour," said Jayaraman.

As of Jan. 1 in Michigan, the basic combined cash and tip minimum were a rate of $9.25 -- the maximum tip credit against the minimum wage is $5.73  and the minimum cash wage is $3.52.
