Judge Rules EMU Violated Title IX; Orders Teams Reinstated

Two women filed suit over the elimination of the teams

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A federal judge in Detroit has called a halt to a plan to eliminate Eastern Michigan University's tennis and softball teams.

Officials say the move will save the school $2.5 million. U.S. Judge George Steeh says that isn't a defense for violating Title IX -- a federal law enacted in 1972 that requires schools to provide equal athletic opportunities to both genders for any federally funded education program or activity.

Two women, a softball player and a tennis player, filed suit over the elimination of the teams. Steeh has ordered both sides back into court in October to figure out a plan to reinstate the teams.
