Judge Rules In Favor Of Sterling Heights To Allow Building Of Mosque

August 01, 2018 - 5:00 pm

DETROIT (WWJ) - A federal judge has ruled in favor of the city of Sterling Heights in connection with their approval to allow the building of a mosque.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Court Judge Gershwin Drain issued a 23-page opinion and order stating that the city was within its rights to approve the building of the mosque and move forward with the consent judgment with the American Islamic Community Center (AICC).

The proposed mosque is planned for a site off 15 Mile Road between Ryan and Mound.

Plaintiffs in the case, which included residents in the neighboring community of the proposed mosque claimed, among other things, that the city did not follow due process, ignored its zoning ordinance, and that the city violated the Michigan Open Meetings Act when audience members were removed during a city council meeting.

The plaintiffs plan to appeal the ruling.
