Kid Rock Apologizes For Senate Campaign Publicity Stunt

June 13, 2018 - 6:14 pm

NOVI, Mich. (WWJ) - Kid Rock says he's sorry for deceiving his fans with a fake run for Senate last year.

Attending a rally for actual Republican candidate John James Tuesday night in Novi, the Michigan-native musician -- whose real name is Robert Ritchie -- said proceeds from "Kid Rock for Senate" memorabilia sold at his concerts on a "Kid Rock for Senate" website went to help register people to vote.

Ritchie told the crowd the publicity stunt was all "fun and games" until the public began to think he was serious.

It was then, Ritchie said, that he was painted by opponents as a racist, Nazi, homophobe and Islamophobe.

"But what I didn't factor was the people that supported me, and letting them down," he said. "I was hearing from the White House weekly. There was governors, senators that endorsed me. There was people that wrote me letters from all over the state saying they would give their time to me. So, to those people, I apologize."

After apologizing, the 47-year-old singer, songwriter, rapper and producer threw his support behind James, a conservative who will look to unseat Democrat Debbie Stabenow in the Senate in November.

Videos of Ritchie's act went viral last year, when -- introduced as Michigan’s “next senator" -- he opened Little Caesars Arena with a six-show series which included a rap laced with political speech.
