Lake St. Clair Metropark Beach Closed, Again, Due To E. Coli

27 beaches are now closed across Michigan

HARRISON TWP. (WWJ) - The "no swimming" sign has once again been posted at Lake St. Clair Metropark Beach due to high levels of e. coli bacteria. 

Harrison Township officials put out an alert on Tuesday saying the health department has closed the beach -- commonly known as "Metro Beach" -- until further notice. 

The annoucnement comes as 27 beaches are closed across Michigan, also including St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach. Most of the others, however, are located in Upper Peninsula, which experienced heavy rains and severe flooding in recent weeks.

E. coli bacteria sometimes gets into the water from improper waste connections to storm sewers, sewer overflows and storm runoff, although the cause of these latest problems was not immediately released. 

Testing by the Michigan Department of Environmental quality is conducted at 1220 public beaches and 537 private beaches throughout the state all summer long, so it's a good idea to check back for updates here at and at this link.
