DETROIT (WWJ) -- Police have arrested a man in connection to a fire in an unoccupied apartment building on Detroit's west side.

Fire crews responded late Wednesday afternoon to a blaze at an abandoned four-story apartment building in the area of Oakman Boulevard and Linwood Street.

No one was injured and WWJ's Stephanie Davis reports that authorities made an arrest and the man told authorities he had "some involvement with the fire," according to battalion chief Michael Jefferson, though he did not call it arson.

Jefferson says when crews first arrived there was heavy fire showing on the third floor and crews went in and made an aggressive interior attack, though that didn't last long.

"When you work with the best fire department in the world, we normally go in and they get these fires out quick," Jefferson said. "The fire got in the attic area above the firefighters and it forced us out and we had to go into a defensive operation.”

While the building is abandoned, authorities believe squatters were inside, trying to stay warm.

As of 9 p.m. the fire was still smoldering after about five hours. Davis reported two ladders stretched over the top of the building spraying water down on it.

Six fire trucks were at the scene and DTE Energy crews were standing by.
