WARREN (WWJ) - A 55-year-old man has died after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver and then dragged for nearly a mile while trying to cross the street in Warren.

The accident happened around 10 p.m. Wednesday along Schoenherr Road near 9 Mile Road.

The man was attempting to cross Schoenherr just north of Toepfer Road when he was struck by a red Chrysler Sebring and was dragged to Stephens Road. After the man was dislodged from the vehicle, he was struck by a second vehicle which did stop at the scene.

Police say the initial vehicle fled the scene after the collision, heading north on Groesbeck.

Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer said investigators are currently reviewing video from neighboring businesses. He's encouraging the suspect to turn themselves in.

Schoenherr Road was closed until just before 8 a.m. Thursday while police were investigating the scene, but has since reopened to traffic.
