CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) - A 72-year-old man is facing charges after authorities say he was caught on camera scratching cars in a Clinton Township library parking lot.

Gary Young was arraigned in 41-B District Court Wednesday on two counts of Malicious Destruction of Property over $1,000, but less than $20,000, and given a a $5,000, 10% bond.

Police and prosecutors say that on multiple occasions between March 22 and May 13, Young would park outside the Clinton Macomb Library, got out of his vehicle, "act in a suspicious manner," and then get back into his vehicle and drive off.

It's alleged, according to investigators, that Young walked up to parked cars and intentionally scratched the paint with a sharp object, leaving a trail of expensive damage.

“This behavior is very troubling,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith, in a statement. “Libraries, schools, parks are all community environments we want our citizens to visit and feel safe doing so. You would never think, while checking out a book, a senior citizen, with no apparent motive, is maliciously damaging your vehicle in the parking lot.”

While Young has thus far only been charged in connection with two incidents, Smith said library surveillance footage shows there are more victims.

"We encourage the public to come forward if they noticed similar scratches to their vehicle after visiting the Clinton Library over the past few months," Smith said. "Mr. Young will be held accountable for this malicious behavior.”

The charges come after police on Monday released security photos showing the suspect, asking for help to identify him.
