Man Fatally Shot By Detroit Police Officer Investigating Child's Murder

DETROIT (WWJ) - An investigation is underway in Detroit into a deadly officer-involved shooting that followed a murder of a little girl.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said it all started on Linden near Evergreen Rd., Thursday night, on the city's west side, where a lone shooter broke into a home and opened fire at a woman lying next to her 5-year-old daughter.

The woman, shot 16 times, was critically injured, Craig said; and the little girl, shot once in the head, was killed.

Hours later, at around 5 a.m. Friday, officers looking for a suspect in the shooting served a search warrant at a house about two miles away, on Evergreen at Cathedral, south of W. Chicago Rd.

There, Craig said, police encountered a 46-year-old man, who pointed a high-powered firearm officers.

An officer then shot the man seven times, killing him.

At a news conference Friday afternoon, Craig told reporters that the man killed by police may, or may not have had anything to do with the death of the 5-year-old victim.

However: "When an individual is armed with this weapon," Craig said, holding up an image of a firearm, "and this weapon is pointed in the direction of a police officer, clearly this officer in his mind believes he is faced with an imminent threat."

"And so whether he's the suspect involved in the shooting the night prior," the chief said, "he is now a suspect in a felonious assault against a Detroit police officer. So this is not a 'wrong person' who is armed with a high-powered weapon."

Following the officer-involved shooting, Craig said a woman in the home, identified as the sister of the mother who was shot, was arrested.

"We have information that the mother and her siblings, her sisters, had been...involved in an ongoing dispute. We believe that that's part of this tragedy," the chief explained. "Some of the witnesses have reported that hours before there was a very loud argument, not physical, between the two sisters."

Police also arrested a suspect in the child's death at another location.

Heroin was found at the house police raided, Craig said, and addional arrests were made.

Craig noted that the man shot by police was related to the child killed. No names have been released as an investigation continues.
