Man Found Dead After Blaze Where Water Pipes Failed

Water cascaded into the basement

(WWJ) Investigators are looking for the cause behind this morning's fatal fire at an apartment building that left a 53-year-old man dead.

The fire was on the tenth floor of the Leland on Bagley on the northeast side of downtown, and firefighters encountered difficulties extinguishing it. When firefighters attempted to pump from the system, the water pipes in the apartments ruptured, sending water cascading into the basement.

Firefighters managed to overcome the situation and get water to the blaze.

Fire Capt. Chris Dixon told WWJ's Mike Campbell the fire is under investigation. "We're trying to determine what actually happened right now," Dixon said.

The arson team was sifting through evidence, Campbell said.

The ninth through 11th floors were temporarily evacuated; Residents were let back in a few hours later, but apartments had suffered smoke and water damage.
