Man Gets 18-45 Years Prison For Robbing Transgender Woman

January 26, 2019 - 12:31 pm

DETROIT (WWJ) - A man responsible for the armed robbery of a local transgender woman is headed to prison.

Antoine Simmons on Thursday was sentenced to 18 to 45 years in prison after being convicted earlier this month of armed robbery and the use of a firearm in connection with a felony.

Officials say Simmons, who was carrying a gun, attacked a transgender woman while she was walking home from a store. The 28-year-old struck his victim in the back of the head multiple times and took her purse.

The case was assigned to Special Prosecutor Jaimie Powell Horowitz of the Fair Michigan Justice Project, which is a program that assists Michigan law enforcement officers and prosecutors in solving serious crimes against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons.

"Mr. Simmons' lengthy prison sentence should serve as a message that criminals can no longer prey upon Detroit’s LGBTQ community with impunity," Fair Michigan President Alanna Maguire said in a statement.

No further details about the incident were released.
