DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit man will spend 32 to 52 years in prison for robbing and shooting a transgender woman on Woodward Avenue.

According to investigators, 21-year-old Charles Brown and an accomplice attacked the 36-year-old victim as she stood near a bus stop at Worcester Place, just north of 6 Mile Road, early one morning last November.

The suspects told the victim to drop everything and run, police said, before Brown shot the woman three times in the back with a .22-rifle and she tried to run away. Chilling video of the incident was captured on a high definition camera at a closed Project Green Light business.

The victim -- who goes by the nickname "Chocolate" -- was hospitalized and disabled after the attack, with two bullets lodged near her spine, but she survived.

The case was investigated by a special prosecutor with the Fair Michigan Justice Project (FMJP), which is collaboration between the Prosecutor’s Office and Fair Michigan, a Wayne County LGBTQ advocacy nonprofit organization that assists Michigan law enforcement officers and prosecutors in solving serious crimes against lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people.

“Charles Brown’s sentence is a just and measured response to his horrific crimes against an innocent transgender woman," Fair Michigan President Dana Nessel said, in a statement Tuesday. "This case demonstrates the continuing need for the Fair Michigan Justice Project, which, in association with the Prosecutor’s Office and the Detroit Police, was established to provide LGBTQ individuals with an effective, focused, and tenacious team dedicated to investigating, prosecuting, and solving these violent crimes against the LGBTQ community.”

Brown's accomplice, 19-year-old Jujuan Williams, was sentenced in March after he accepted a plea deal for 15 to 30 years in prison.
