(WWJ) A 34-year-old man is an intensive care unit following a crash that shut down a stretch I-696 for several hours Thursday.

According to Michigan State Police, the driver may have suffered a medical emergency before he lost control of his Ford vehicle at around 6:30 a.m., then driving across the westbound lanes of 696 near I-75.

He hit two Chevy vehicles, police said, before crashing into the center median.

The Ford driver was rushed to Royal Oak Beaumont hospital where where he remained in the ICU Thursday afternoon.

Police said both Chevy drivers were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

As a result of the crash, westbound 696 was closed at the scene through the morning rush with debris scattered across the freeway. Drivers forced off westbound 696 as Dequindre as police investigated, but all lanes have since reopened.

No names have been released.
