WEST BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) - One person is dead and another is hospitalized following a head-on crash in West Bloomfield.

According to West Bloomfield police, the accident happened at around 10 a.m. at Pontiac Trail and Deckerland St., east of Halsted.

Deputy Police Chief Kirt Lawson said a woman was driving a Lincoln MKZ westbound on Pontiac Trail when, according to witnesses, she crossed over the double yellow center line into oncoming traffic, striking a blue Honda.

Lawson said the man driving the Honda was taken by EMS to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The female driver was also taken to the hospital where she was intervied by investigators. It's unclear at this time how badly she was injured.

"She was able to talk at the scene, but I don't know her current status," Lawson told WWJ's Sandra McNeill. Both drives were alone in their vehicles and no one else was hurt.

Lawson said police do not know yet why the woman crossed into oncoming traffic; if she may have had a medical emergency, or what else may have led to the crash.  As of 12 p.m. police remained on the scene investigating.

"Certainly it's a bad crash, as we had a fatality," Lawson said. "Our thoughts are with the family."

Lawson said the intersection was closed but was expected to reopen to traffic shortly.

Police are not releasing names or any information about the fatal victim or the other driver at this time.
