(WWJ) An attempted family meeting on Thanksgiving turned ugly when police say a 30-year-old man shot an 18-year-old relative to death at a motel on Detroit's west side.

Police say it happened at 3:35 p.m. Thursday at the Cranbrook Inn Motel in the the 20500 block of James Couzens. The teen victim and two other people reportedly stopped by to pick up the suspect.

As they tried to enter the hotel room, police say the suspect "allegedly fired a shot, striking the victim."

He died at the hospital.

Police arrested the suspect at the scene, later identifying him as Willie Dee Howard. He was arraigned Sunday on a manslaughter charge, and bond was denied.

Howard is due back in court for a hearing Dec. 10.
