June 15, 2019 - 3:17 pm

WATERFORD TWP. (WWJ) -  Police in Waterford Township are trying to identify a man who stole a purse and SUV from an 81-year-old resident -- and it's apparently not the first time he's targeted an elderly woman.

The latest crime happened around 1:17 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of Tenuta's Food Lane on Sashabaw Road just north of West Walton Boulevard.

According to police, the suspect followed the victim out of the store into the parking lot and grabbed the purse out of her hands before she could get into her vehicle. During the robbery, the victim fell to the ground and sustained minor injuries.

The suspect attempted to flee the area in the vehicle he arrived in, but it became stuck on a curb. At that point, the suspect came back to the victim's vehicle, got inside and fled south on Sashabaw Road.

Police are still trying to locate the victim's vehicle, a white 2018 Dodge Journey with Michigan license plate DXE8549.

The suspect is described as a black man, medium height and weight, with a full beard. He was wearing gray sweatpants, a gray t-shirt, black Nike shoes, a black back support brace and silver necklace with a charm.

Police say the suspect may have been involved in a similar purse snatching that happened June 3 in the parking lot of the Waterford Senior Center on Pontiac Lake Road.

In that instance, police say the suspect followed a 76-year-old woman into the parking lot and grabbed her purse out of her hands as she exited her vehicle. He fled the scene in an older model white Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck.
