MGM Grand Detroit Ditching Plastic Straws

DETROIT (WWJ) - The war against straws continues.

In an ongoing effort to reduce the amount of plastic waste that plagues our environment, MGM Resorts International is joining other major brands in banning plastic straws at its businesses.

The company says the effort will remove more than 250,000 straws a day from landfills and waterways -- amounting to 100 million straws each year.  Straws will only be provided upon request.

MGM Resorts International owns 19 resorts across the U.S., including the MGM Grand in Detroit.

Meanwhile -- Starbucks announced this week that it would be phasing out straws at its restaurants by 2020.

Straws add up to about 2,000 tons of the nearly 9 million tons of plastic waste that ends up in waters around the globe each year. Studies say one plastic drinking straw can take up to 200 years to break down in the environment.
