Michelle Obama Drops In On Detroit Group Meeting Actor Keegan-Michael Key

DETROIT (WWJ) - A select group of former Wayne State students got quite a surprise Tuesday as they gathered for what was billed as a meeting with actor Keegan-Micheal Key.

But as they were talking to Key, a Detroit native, former first lady Michelle Obama walked through the doors at the Motown Museum.

The former first lady encouraged the young men to push through discomfort -- saying it's the only way to grow and to never be ashamed of what they have been through.

"Because you are apologizing for the life that you lived and that somehow that life is not worthy, but it is absolutely what makes you all so unique and so powerful by the many different ways that you got to this place."

"You don't want to hide that from anybody," she said. "Start doing some things that make you feel that little sense of reservation and then push through it and realize that in the end -- that's where the growth happens."

Obama spent over an hour with the students.

Journalists were allowed into the event but were told they would be removed if they asked any questions.

Obama has been on a cross-country tour promoting her memoir "Becoming."
