(WWJ) More pain at the pump. AAA Michigan says average gas prices statewide are up about 6 cents from a week ago to an average of about $2.88 per gallon.

The Dearborn-based auto club says Monday the average price for self-serve regular unleaded is about 3 cents more than a year ago.

The state's highest average was about $2.93 a gallon in the Benton Harbor and Marquette areas, according to AAA Michigan, which surveys daily fuel prices at 2,800 gas stations across the state. Prices in the metro Detroit area were about $2.86 per gallon, up about 3 cents from a week ago, while the lowest price in the state was about $2.85 in the Flint and Traverse City areas.

"Robust gas demand continues to shrink stocks and drive up pump prices," said AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland in a media releae. "Prices may fluctuate, but with the summer driving season approaching we will likely see pump prices continue to increase."

A spike at this time of year is in no way unusual. Exactly one year ago today WWJ Newsradio 950 reported that gas prices had jumped to more than $3 a gallon at some stations in and around the metro Detroit area.

"Prices may fluctuate, but with the summer driving season approaching we will likely see pump prices continue to increase," Woodland said.

Looking at prices nationwide, Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.com, noted an overall spike of around 4 cents a gallon in the past week. As of Sunday night, the average price around the U.S. was $2.89 per gallon, which is 8 cents higher than is was a year ago. Only Florida and Missiouri saw declines last week.

DeHaan said a peak in the price may be just a couple weeks away.
