BATTLE CREEK (WWJ/AP) - A 64-year-old Michigan man is facing charges, accused of sexually assaulting four young women and girls who he lived with in a van.

The Battle Creek Enquirer reported Wednesday that Calhoun County prosecutors have authorized seven counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct against John T. Craig of Battle Creek involving the victims who are now 21, 18, 17 and 15 years old.

Battle Creek Detective Sgt. Todd Elliott told the newspaper that the 17-year-old girl whom the man and his wife reported as a runaway April 25 told officers after being located that she had been molested and sexually assaulted since she was 12.

The older girls allegedly told investigators that Craig had them watch pornography and that he wanted to teach them things to help them when they had boyfriends. He allegedly used threats to control them, the victims reported, saying he would take away their cell phones and to keep them from having friends.

While Craig's wife also lived in the van, along with two other children, Elliott said there is no evidence that the wife knew about the sexual assaults. "He would drop her off in a store and then go to the back part of a parking lot and assault the kids," Elliott said.

The group lived in the van together for about two years, according to police. The case was brought to the attention of investigators after the 17-year-old girl was reported as a runaway.

The minor children have been placed in foster care. The two young women, whom Elliot said are mentally disabled, have been placed in adult foster care.

Craig was arrested Tuesday amd was scheduled to appear in Calhoun County District Court for an arraignment Wednesday afternoon.
