GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ) - A West Michigan mother is in trouble with the law after police say she falsely claimed her child has been kidnapped, triggering an Amber Alert.

Kent County Prosecutors said 27-year-old Jennell Michelle Ross has been charged with one felony count of filing a false report of a child abduction.

According to Grand Rapids police, Ross reported Saturday afternoon that her 18-month-old daughter, Jaionna Ross, was taken from a gas station at 44th Street SE and Kalamazoo Avenue in Grand Rapids.

Ross told police that a man named "Terrell", whom she'd met at a park, had stolen her car with the little girl inside.

Due to the seriousness of the mother's claim, an Amber Alert was issued by Michigan State Police, a multi-agency search began, and the woman's car was quickly located without the child inside. A short time later, police said, Jaionna was found unharmed in the care of a family member who contacted police.

After follow-up interviews, police said, it was determined that the mom had made up the story about the stolen vehicle and the kidnapping

Police said it's unclear at this time why she did it.
