DETROIT (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police are investigating after arresting a convicted felon who tried to flee their capture on Belle Isle.

MSP Metro Detroit tweeted Friday evening that around 6:45 p.m. troopers stopped a vehicle on the island for speeding and a safety belt violation. Neither the driver nor the passenger had identification and the passenger gave a fake name. The trooper requested backup.

The troopers were attempting to get "the nervous passenger" out of the vehicle when during the course of handcuffing, the suspect attempted to jump the door jamb and flee onto the island.

One of the troopers sustained a lower leg injury while handcuffing the suspect, who police say is a convicted felon and had two current felony warrants.

Police say the suspect was in possession of $264 of fraudulent U.S. currency and several bags of suspected marijuana. An investigation is ongoing
