Michigan Teen Leads Effort To Help Survivors Of Florence Flooding

PELLSTON, Mich. (WWJ) - With flooding devastation in the Carolinas from Hurricane Florence, a northern Michigan teen decided to help because she's seen tough times, too.

Pellston High School senior Tiffanie Fochtman is leading a collection at Pellston High School and Middle School for hurricane relief.

Why is she doing it?

Fochtman told WWJ's Beth Fisher she's been homeless a couple of times, once after her home was destroyed by a fire.

"I've been put into positions where I know what it feels like not to have what you need and to have stuff taken from you," the teen said. "And I just, I saw that...they're having their homes taken from them, they're having all their stuff taken from them and they're going to work and they're coming home to nothing."

"So I thought it would be better to help give back to people who are in worse situations than me."

Items can be donated for the relief effort in person at the middle/high school office through September 28 (information here). Made a financial donation online at this link
