(WWJ) If he thought hiding behind a light pole was going to shield him from an angry ex, he learned a hard lesson.

Police allege a 35-year-old woman in northern Michigan attempted to  run over her ex-boyfriend when she saw him on the street. With quick reflexes, he dodged behind a pole. She reportedly struck the metal pole and broke it in half.

She was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon by police in Dowagiac, Mich.

"It's true," Dowagiac Chief Steve Grinnewald told WWJ. "She knocked it right over."

Per Mlive, it unfolded at about 12:11 p.m. Sunday, April 21. That's when Dowagiac Police Department officers were dispatched to Main Street near Pennsylvania Avenue for a traffic crash involving a pickup and a light pole .

The victim, a 39-year-old Dowagiac man, told the cops he had broken up with the suspect on Saturday. Then on Sunday, he was strolling the sidewalk to get to a nearby grocery store when his ex-girlfriend "saw him and drove up over the curb and onto the sidewalk in an attempt to hit him with the vehicle," police said.

When the dust cleared, Grinnewald said the suspect told a couple of different stories about what happened, but none of them -- other than the obvious -- were credible.

"She didn't really say (why) one way or the other," he said. "She made a couple of different excuses trying not to incriminate herself. But there's no way she would have gotten there any other way."

Miraculously, police said the man was not injured, though he did have some words for his ex. "There was a little bit of verbal going back and forth. Obviously, the guy was pretty upset," Grinnewald said.

The suspect complained of pain in her wrist and was transported to to the hospital for treatment before she was arrested.
