CLINTON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Three children were found locked in a van Sunday in a store parking lot as temperatures inched toward the 100-degree mark.

Clinton Township Police Captain Richard Maierle telling WWJ that they received a call after 9 a.m. and found a 2-year-old, 4-year-old and a 6-year-old locked in a van in the Meijer parking lot on Groesbeck Hwy.

Police were able to convince the oldest child to unlock the Dodge Caravan. "She was sweating profusely."

Meanwhile, another officer found the mother inside the Meijer store shopping.

"She had told us that she had been outside a couple of times to check on the child," says Maierle. "We reviewed the security tape from the store and it showed she parked at 08:40 (hours) and walked to the store at 8:44 and then walked out at 9:09 -- so she never left to check on the kid."

Police say the front windows were open about an inch for ventilation.

The mother was arrested and released, and the prosecutor's office will review the incident.

The children were picked up by their aunt.
