More Organ Donors In Michigan Than Ever Before, But More Are Needed

July 19, 2018 - 12:38 pm

LANSING (WWJ) - Some good news for the more than 3,200 Michiganders waiting for a life-changing transplant: There are more organ donors in the state than ever before.

WWJ Health Reporter Dr. Deanna Lites says more than 5 million Michigan residents have joined the Organ Donor Registry.

Fred Woodham with the Secretary of State's Office says expanding the registry has been a priority over the past seven years -- and a lot of progress has been made.

"The number was at about 27 percent of Michigan residents; it's now at 64 percent," he told Lites on Thursday.

Anyone can join the Michigan Organ Donor Registry, regardless of age or medical history. Go to, call 866-500-5801 or visit any Secretary of State office to sign up. About 85 percent of people who sign up do so through Secretary of State offices.

“Every name is a beacon of hope,” Secretary of State Ruth Johnson said, in a statement. “I want to thank everyone who has taken a moment to make this pledge. However, we will continue to encourage people to sign up on the registry as the need continues to grow.”
