TROY (WWJ) - A young man is in police custody after an hour and a half manhunt following the fatal beating of a woman in Troy on Monday.

Police say the 20-year-old Indian man got into a heated argument with his aunt and it appears that he beat her to death with some sort of steel weightlifting equipment.

When police arrived to the scene in the area of Square Lake and John R Roads near Troy Beaumont Hospital, around 2:30 p.m., the suspect jumped out of a second story window and fled the scene on foot.

After more than an hour of searching with K-9 units, police say he was discovered hiding in the weeds near a golf course on South Boulevard.

Troy Police Captain Bob Redmond tells WWJ that another male subject who was distraught was in the home at the time and he was brought in for questioning.

"I can’t identify him. I actually don’t even know who he is; he doesn’t speak much English," Redmond said.

Redmond says the male was so distraught he had to be carried from the home.

Joe Hogan, who lives in the area, says he doesn't know the family, but has lived in Troy for 60 years and was shocked by the scenes that unfolded Monday.

“We would leave our doors open, never really locked doors or anything," Hogan told WWJ. "But it’s a different world we live in today. Seeing all the police going up and down, helicopters and dogs going through my yard… It was interesting.”

The names of the victim and suspect have not been released, but authorities say charges are expected to take a couple days to be filed.
