Nearly A Million Facebook Users Want To 'Storm Area 51'

The US Air Force says that's a bad idea.

WWJ -- Have you ever wondered what's really at Area 51?

So have more than 930,000 Facebook users, apparently.

A satirical Facebook event titled "Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us" has gone viral over the last week, with the event's creators proposing a meet-up at a tourist center near Area 51, before storming the facility to "see them Aliens."

Area 51 is a highly classified remote detachment of Edwards Air Force Base in Nevada that many conspiracy theorists believe contains answers to questions about UFOs, aliens and other strange phenomena. The CIA has acknowledged the base exists, but has not disclosed what goes on at Area 51, but many believe it is a ground for testing and developing experimental aircraft and weapons.

While the Facebook event was made as a joke -- one of the event's creators has said he doesn't actually intend on storming Area 51 -- nearly a million users have said they are going on Sept. 20 and more than 800,000 others have said they're "interested" in attending the event.

What would happen if some folks actually tried to go through with the siege on Area 51? It wouldn't go over well. A U.S. Air Force spokesperson told The Washington Post they are aware of the Facebook event, but could not discuss plans and procedures at the base. She did, however, discourage people from going to the base.

"[Area 51> is an open training range for the U.S. Air Force, and we would discourage anyone from trying to come into the area where we train American armed forces," Laura McAndrews said. “The U.S. Air Force always stands ready to protect America and its assets.”

While the event is not intended to be taken seriously, it has gotten quite a bit of attention and has been forum full of funny memes and jokes about aliens.

Bob Lazar doesn’t want you to go to Area 51! #Repost @unitednuclearbob with @Rep0stApp • • • • • • • I have to comment on this ‘Storm Area 51’ thing. I do understand it was started as a joke by someone, but there are a number of people who are actually planning on showing up. This is a misguided idea. Area 51 is a classified research base. There are no aliens or alien technology located there. The only place there was ever any alien technology was at Site S4, south of Area 51 proper. That was 30 years ago. S4 may have moved decades ago or it’s possible it’s no longer being used for the project. I do not support this ‘movement’. The last time someone tried to get in to Area 51 he was shot. This is not the way to go about trying to get more information. What is good, is the interest in the subject - the science and technology. That is what would immediately change the world we live in.
