DETROIT (WWJ) - Police are trying to uncover the cause of a fire Detroit's east side that killed one man and left four others running for their lives.

Authorities say a home in the 14200 block of Mayfield, near Houston Whittier and Chalmers, caught fire just before 3 a.m. Thursday when it was believed that an unknown suspect threw an object inside of the house.

Four victims were able to escape. After the fire was extinguished, a 41-year-old man was found dead inside the home.

Preliminary information pointed to a firebombing, according to authorities, but Detroit Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell said arson investigators weren't immediately able to find evidence of an accelerant at the scene.

What else may have been the cause, and other circumstances surrounding this incident remain under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Detroit Police Department’s Arson Unit at 313-596-2940. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
